Rumble in the Station

Saint John Riptide promote active living and literacy at second Annual “Rumble in the Station”

Saint John, N.B., February  02 2018

The Saint John Riptide in partnership with PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) and several local businesses are providing a unique opportunity for middle school students from 4 city centre schools. Students and staff will participate in the second Riptide Rumble in the Station which promotes active living and this year, literacy.

To get started in sport, young people need three things: the right equipment, the right training, and the chance to play. Rumble in the Station meets those needs, providing participants with t-shirts, a basketball clinic offered by the SJ Riptide players, pizza,  snacks and a friendly jamboree at Harbour Station. Participants also receive a basketball themed novel to encourage reading in a fun way.  Athletes then attend the Riptide game as a group that evening as VIPs receiving snacks compliments of Harbour Station.

Scott VanWart, Saint John Riptide CEO and President, states, “Saint John inner-city youth will be the primary beneficiaries of this event which we are incredibly proud to be running for the second time. Our employees and business/community leaders will be onsite participating; handing out the, books and t-shirts, providing lunch, and volunteering with all of the activities. We expect to have 40 youth plus several school staff attending the event this year.”

States Mike Anderson, Director of Operations for the Riptide, “Rumble in the Station has been a team effort! The students and staff of Hazen-White/St. Francis, Princess Elizabeth, St. John the Baptist/King Edward, and Prince Charles schools will enjoy a great day thanks to our generous supporters: Anglophone South School District, CAA  (Canadian Automobile Association), Domino’s Pizza, Harbour Station, Innovatia, J. D. Irving, Limited, Kent Building Supplies, PALS, and the Saint John Riptide.

Together we are helping families overcome barriers to basketball participation and literacy, our two main community themes for this season. The support of the local community, both businesses and individual volunteers, for this event has been amazing to see. I think we all realize the importance of strengthening our inner city community through programs like this.”

The Rumble date is set for Sat, Feb 3rd and will begin at 9:00am with introductions and run until approximately 11:30am. The Rumble activities are open to the public and all are welcome! All the participants will be attending the game Saturday evening at 7:00pm between the Saint John Riptide and the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans.
