Bartley’s late-game heroics lead Riptide to win over Titans

KITCHENER, Ont. – Frank Bartley hit a deep three-pointer with two seconds left to give the Saint John Riptide a 105-104 win over the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans Thursday night.

Bartley scored the last six points for Saint John, and 30 on the night, to give the team its fourth win of the National Basketball League of Canada season.

Three of those wins have come in southern Ontario.

The victory snapped the Tide’s three-game losing streak while the Titans saw their string of five straight wins come to an end.

Daniel Dingle scored 18 in the win while T.J. Maston added 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Brent Arrington scored a dozen and handed out nine dimes for the Riptide, who improved to 4-11.

Ashton Smith, who began his NBL of Canada career in Saint John, scored 24 for the 8-6 Titans. Derek Hall and Joel Friesen each tallied 21.

After scoring just 37 points in the first half, Saint John posted 33 points in the third quarter to take a 70-67 advantage heading into the final stanza.

The Riptide opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 47-47 with three minutes gone.

Saint John trailed 45-37 at the half after being held to 10 points in the second quarter.  The Riptide led 27-23 following the opening stanza, despite being outscored 6-0 to start the contest.

Friday, Saint John travels to Windsor to face the Express. They finish their Ontario swing next Sunday against the Lightning in London.

They return to the Maritimes to face the Island Storm in Charlottetown next Thursday. Cape Breton Highlanders host the ‘Tide Jan. 19.

Saint John’s next home games are Jan. 23 against the Sudbury Five, and Jan. 24 against Windsor.
