Otieno Re-signs With The Riptide

August 22, 2018

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick —Canadian guard Kenny Otieno has agreed to terms with the Riptide.  The Calgary, Alberta, native will return for his second season in Saint John.

“Kenny finished the season very strong for us last year,” head coach and general manager Nelson Terroba said. “In our playoff series against Moncton, Kenny stepped in and played at a high level when it mattered most.”

As with many returning players, the fan support and the overall community of Saint John made their mark on Otieno.

“I decided to return to the Riptide because I loved the support from the fans and the community and feel like coming back to Saint John is the best situation for me to continue to improve my game and be able to contribute to the team with a bigger role,” Otieno said. “Another main reason is the relationship I have with Coach Nelson.  I respect and value his attention to detail and style of coaching. I got injured last year and was out for couple months and he had my back and gave me an opportunity to play and contribute after recovering.”

Despite having to deal with a tough ankle injury mid-season, Otieno fought thru and rehabbed and stayed ready, playing a valuable role in the playoffs against Moncton.

“This summer I have been working on improving my handle, and making my shot quicker and more consistent, Otieno said. “I have also been doing different workouts to help with my athleticism and help my body get stronger and less prone to injury.”

The Riptide will look to Otieno’s strength and physicality on both the defensive and offensive end from the guard position.

“Kenny’s strength was great in being able to defeat screens and be physical at the point of attack,” Terroba said. He also played big as a rebounder and gave us extra possessions.”

“I enjoyed the the chemistry that we had as a team (Donut Squad!),” Otieno said. “Our team went through some tough times with roster turnover but we were able to regroup and finish strong. Hopefully we can build from that and make a deeper run in playoffs.”
