After an extensive search the Saint John Riptide are excited to announce that Nelson Terroba, who spent last season on the bench of the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA development league, has been named head coach for the 2017-18 season.
The Riptide organization spent several weeks interviewing candidates from across North America in search of the right combination of basketball IQ, professional experience, and most importantly commitment to the community and a winning culture. Riptide Director of Operations Mike Anderson commented “We were fortunate to speak to a number of quality candidates but Nelson stood out as he shared the goals and vision of the Riptide organization. We are extremely confident he will represent our brand well and make our fans proud.”
Terroba takes the helm following the departure of previous head coach Rob Spon in May. The NBL of Canada season kicks off Nov 18th with training camps starting towards the end of October, however Terroba is already hard at work reviewing game film, recruiting players and finalizing his staff.
Terroba had the following to say about joining the Riptide ““I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Saint John Riptide. Throughout the interview process, I have been impressed by the strong sense of community present in Saint John and the important role the team plays in the community. That was very important to me.”
Coach Terroba continued “I also appreciated the honesty and the genuine care that the Riptide leadership of Mike Anderson and Scott Van Wart have shown in building a program that players, fans, coaches and the entire community can be proud of. I can’t wait to get to work with the players and look forward to meeting the Saint John community. Our goals are to build a team that plays the ‘Riptide Way’— showcasing our player strengths, playing great team defense, sharing the basketball, playing with a great joy for the game, and honoring the game with a championship effort on a nightly basis.”
Fans will have the opportunity to meet Coach Terroba at a press conference on Sept 20 at 12:30PM at the Saint John City Market. Terroba will also be hosting a Facebook live session shortly where Riptide fans can submit their questions to the coach about the upcoming season.
