LONDON, ON – The Saint John Riptide continued their five game road trip through the province of Ontario on Wednesday night as they visited Budweiser Gardens to take on the Central Division leading London Lightning. Last time these two teams met Saint John had several players out with suspensions and the Lightning had some injuries, so this was marquee match-up around the league.
London came out firing in the first quarter as the home crowd gave them a spark and they outscored the Riptide by eight in the frame. Nothing was falling for the visiting Riptide but it was the opposite for the Lightning as they made several key shots early. The buzzer sounded with the home side leading 36-28 after one quarter.
The second quarter was a complete reversal of sorts as the Riptide exploded offensively while also shutting down the Lightning’s offence. A 37-point outburst in the second propelled the visitors into their first lead of the game as the Lightning could only muster up 25 points in the second quarter. At the half, Saint John held the lead 65-61.
After the midway break London was on a mission and wasted no time erasing the Saint John lead. Marcus Capers was on fire from downtown knocking down three-ball after three-ball and that was key for the Lightning as they jumped ahead of the Riptide 92-89 going into the fourth quarter. Saint John battled back in the fourth but a late offensive foul against the visitors gave the Lightning two free throws and they sealed the deal, 124-119 the final score.
Anthony Anderson went off for 31 points while Olu Famutimi had 19 and Gabe Freeman had 18. Darin Mency also added 14 points and Brian Addison finished with 12. Kyle Johnson lead the Lightning with 31 points.
