“We are excited to announce that professional basketball is returning to Saint John for the upcoming NBL Canada 2016 – 2017 season,” said Paul Vaughan, Director of Basketball Operations and a member the new volunteer Executive group.
“The team will be managed by Saint John area ownership and volunteers,” he said. The volunteer Executive, all residents of Saint John, Rothesay and Quispamsis, will be steering the team through the upcoming season tentatively scheduled to begin on December 26, 2016. “There is a great deal of work to be done in a very short period of time and we will be making a series of announcements over the next few days,” Vaughan concluded.
“Today I am very pleased to announce the signing of Rob Spon as Coach and General Manager.” No stranger to Saint John basketball, this will be Spon’s 3rd term as Coach in Saint John and first as General Manager. “Coach Spon’s experience and basketball network will be tremendous assets to our new franchise.”
As announced by the National Basketball League of Canada, the team currently does not have a name. A “Name the Team” contest will be launched Monday through Facebook at facebook.com/sjprobasketball.
“Finally to the fans, we appreciate your patience as we have worked through the negotiations to allow a team to remain in Saint John,” said Vaughan “We pledge to make the games entertaining and exciting as we accept the challenge of bringing a championship to Saint John.
“We are all very excited about the upcoming season,” Vaughan said. “Expectations are high for the team and there will be more great news coming in the very near future.”
