LONDON, ON – The Saint John Riptide improved to 3-0 with a victory over the defending NBLC Champion London Lightning on their home court. Riptide center Anthony Stover was dominant throughout finishing the game with 19 rebounds, 10 points and a franchise record eight blocks.
The Riptide came out of the gate strong and led early in the first quarter led by Gabe Freeman and his 9 first quarter points. The Lightning squad caught their stride late in the quarter and the first quarter ended with the home squad holding a 2 point advantage 30-28.
The second quarter started much the same as the first with the Riptide opening up a 14 point lead. Saint John Head Coach Nelson Terroba worked his bench magically getting big minutes from his Canadian trio of Marvin Binney, Aaron Redpath and Kenny Otieno. Again the Lightning worked their way back into the game and the half ended with the Riptide holding a four-point advantage 54-51.
To open the second half both teams buckled down defensively and a late run by the home squad left the game tied at 74 apiece heading into the final quarter.
The final frame was a back and forth affair that saw both teams going shot for shot. A late fragrant foul on Royce White of the London Lightning gave the Riptide a 4 point edge and they never looked back. Horace Wormely hit a massive 3 point shot with under a minute to go and from there Wormely knocked down an additional 4 foul shots to ice the game.
Gabe Freeman led all scorers with 29 points as well as adding 11 rebounds. Stover dominated on the defensive end nearly completing the triple double. Horace Wormely had 21 points to go with his 7 rebounds and 5 assists. In the end it was a complete team victory with 10 Riptide players playing 10+ minutes and all ten contributing on the score sheet.
The Riptide get some well deserved rest before their next game in Moncton on Friday, December 8th. The Riptide return home to face the Cape Breton Highlanders on Saturday, December 9th for a 7PM at Harbour Station. Get your tickets now!
