SAINT JOHN, NB – The Saint John Riptide played host to the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans on Thursday night. It was the expansion franchises first ever visit to Harbour Station.
It started off as a back-and-forth game but a low scoring one in the first half. Saint John managed to squeak out a 20-17 advantage after the first quarter. The Riptide would slow down in the second however as the Titans put together a strong quarter to lead 44-42 at halftime.
Thankfully the tides would turn in the third quarter, pun intended. Darin Mency and Gabe Freeman, among others, put together huge performances in the frame as Saint John seemingly ran away with this one. Outscoring the Titans 45-21 in the third, the Riptide had a 87-65 lead going in the final quarter.
Kitchener-Waterloo did manage to match the Riptide in scoring in the fourth quarter but it was nowhere near enough to bring the game within reach. Freeman continued his MVP play and the Riptide cruised to victory 121-99.
Gabe finished with 39 points and six rebounds, while Darin Mency posted 25 and went five-for-five at the line. Horace Wormely also added 20 points and seven assists. The Titans were lead by Ricky Tarrant with 19 points and six rebounds.
