SAINT JOHN, NB – The Saint John Riptide were back at Harbour Station Wednesday night, a place where they have not lost so far this season, playing host Orangeville A’s. It was the first of a three-games in three nights home stand for the Riptide and the A’s were making their only stop in the Port City this season.
Orangeville came out firing on all cylinders in the opening minutes of the game and Jameson Tipping hit a three pointer just over three minutes into the game to put the A’s ahead 10-2. That prompted Riptide coach Rob Spon to call a timeout and gather his troops. Whatever was said during that timeout by Spon worked as the home side would climb back and take a 20-16 lead four minutes later thanks to back-to-back threes from Olu Famutimi. At the first quarter buzzer the Riptide remained in the lead 30-24.
The Riptide extend their lead quickly to open the second quarter. Craig Foster scored two quick buckets followed by a pair of free throws by Brian Addison to push their advantage to 36-24. Darin Mency knocked down a three-ball to further extend the lead to 39-24. Coach Spon’s squad never looked back as they stayed in front for the rest of the quarter and went into the halftime break up 62-44.
It only got worse in the second half for Orangeville with the Riptide leading by as many as 21 points throughout the final two quarters of play. Gabe Freeman exploded to record his fourth double-digit point total of the season with 23 points while going eight-for-nine at the free throw line. Anthony Anderson was his usual self posting 26 points and six assists to give the Riptide the win, 125-112.
The victory improves the Riptide record to 5-1 and keeps them undefeated on the Harbour Station hard court this season. Next up for Saint John is a date with the Cape Breton Highlanders on Friday night back at Harbour Station.
