With training camp well underway and players jockeying for position, the Saint John Riptide held an intrasquad game for season tickets holders Tuesday night. Team Blue and Team White went head-to-head at Forest Hills School with players from both sides looking to impress Coach Spon, who watched closely from the bleachers.
Several familiar names suited up in this one with Anthony Anderson, Jabs Newby, and Jahmal McQueen as part of Team Blue while Olu Famutimi and Darin Mency leading Team White. Big man Anthony Stover and the showman Gabe Freeman were not in action, but that didn’t mean they had the night off.
Freeman was on the Team White sideline with Stover taking on coaching duties for Team Blue.
The fans in attendance were given a glimpse into what they can expect on Sunday when the Riptide take on the Island Storm in exhibition play as well as when the season opens on Boxing Day. Double A and Newby paced Team Blue’s offence knocking down threes from all areas of the floor, the same way they have done at Harbour Station so many times before. Darin Mency was on point for the White squad hitting several long balls and making plays at both ends of the court throughout the scrimmage.
Some of the newcomers in camp also chipped in as Craig Foster, Kammron Taylor, and Haakim Johnson put in their fair share of work in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Foster, a first-year pro, showed off his speed and ball movement skills all night running the point for the Blue side. In the end, Team Blue came out on top 89-76 over Team White. After the game players went into the crowd to meet and great the faithful fans on hand, thanking them all for coming.
The Riptide will now continue with daily practices for the remainder of the week in preparation for Sunday afternoon’s pre-season contest against the Storm. This game is FREE to attend thanks to our partnership with the Telegraph Journal. Tip-off is set for 2pm.
