Saint John Riptide announce the signing of Haakim Johnson for the 2016-2017 NBL Canada season.
At 6’7” Haakim Johnson is a small forward/power forward. An explosive offensive player with great size. He possesses great ball-handling skills, a picture perfect shooting stroke and solid defensive awareness.
Coach and General Manager Rob Spon is very familiar with Haakim. “Haakim played for me two years ago with the Rochester Razorsharks, that year we went undefeated and won the PBL Championship,” says Spon. “He is very athletic, shoots the 3 with ease and consistency. He is tenacious on defense, relentless on the offensive boards and can grab defensive rebounds and lead your break or take it all the way for a thunderous dunk.”
Haakim attended The University of Pikeville where he average 14.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists a game as a senior. After college, Haakim was selected with the first overall pick in the PBL draft by The Capitanes De Arecibo. He played the 2010-11 season in Japan with the Toyama Grouses where he averaged 20.5 points, 9 rebounds and 2.3 assists over his last four games of the regular season and the playoffs. After Japan he went on to play in the CIBACOPA in Mexico for the Ostioneros de Guaymas he helped his team to the Finals for the first time in team history. Most recently he was is Damman, Saudi Arabia playing for Al Nahada Sports Club.
